I noticed there’s something off about mentally strong people. They just work differently. I always noticed there’s something about them when we interact, but I couldn’t pinpoint it.

So I asked someone I know who is a mental badass about his secret sauce and he said:

“For progress to be made, you must first change your mindset.

If you do nothing to change your attitude, you will simply stay where you currently are.”

In this article, I show you how the top 5% of mentally strong people are wired and how you become one of them.

1 They practice self-discipline.

They let themselves do what they know, whether or not they want it.

Action step

Put yourself a timer of 25 minutes and do what you set out to do.

2 They take responsibility

They say “I am responsible.”
Even if something isn’t their fault, mentally strong people always feel responsible for their reaction to any situation.

Action step

If something didn’t work out, write it down. Own it. Then tell the other people involved you messed up and how you will avoid such a situation in the future.

3 They are proactive

They remain proactive and take control when problems or difficulties arise.

Action step

Ask how you can help other people. Ask for more responsibility at work. Ask how you can be of service on each and every occasion. Think one step ahead and over deliver.

4 They work hard

Mentally strong people have an appetite for work.

They keep going until their brains literally fail for the day.

Action stop

Punch the day in the face by setting yourself blocked time slots for everything and trying to accomplish each task within the allocated timeframe. You might not get everything done but you will be much more productive than usual.

5 They practice worst-case scenarios

Seneca the Younger, an ancient Stoic philosopher, was an extremely wealthy man.

In order not to soften himself with his wealth, he practiced being dirt-poor for several days.

He wore ragged clothes, ate stale bread, and slept outside on the street.

That way, if he ever lost his entire fortune, it would mentally prepare him for the poor person’s lifestyle and better able to recover.

Action step

Sleep on your coach, try not to spend a dime for a day, only eat lousy porridge for breakfast — simply put, downgrade your life to a minimum. Do it for a week and you will see that it’s actually very liberating because all of a sudden, no matter what happens, you are still pretty damn fine.

6 They are easy on others and hard on themselves

Mentally strong people are compassionate and kind to other people while being tough on themselves and their own excuses.

Action step

Push yourself to get done what you set out and be brutally honest if you messed up and why.

Bottom Line

✅Practice self-discipline: put yourself on a timer of 25 minutes and do what you set out to do.
