Emefiele: DSS Breaks Silence On Fight With Prison Officials, Reveals Next Action

The Department of State Services (DSS) has commenced an investigation in the clash between its operatives and prison services officials during the trial of suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

The  DSS operatives and correctional officers engaged in a tussle inside the Federal High Court in Lagos over the detention of Emefiele.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer of the DSS, Peter Afunanya, described the incident as unfortunate, stating that it does not in any way reflect the professional disposition of the DSS.

NLC To Begin Nationwide Strike August 2

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a plan to embark on a nationwide strike from August 2, 2023.

This is as the NLC issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to reverse all perceived anti-poor policies, including the recent hike in the pump price of petrol, to shelve the planned industrial action.

According to Vanguard, the NLC has also directed all its affiliates and state councils to immediately begin mobilisation of workers and other Nigerians, including civil society allies, for a long-lasting strike and mass protests should the government fail to meet its demands.

This is said to be one of the decisions reached at NLC’s Central Working Committee, CWC, meeting held Tuesday, July 25, at Abuja Labour House.

Senate Issues Directive To FG Over Factional IPOB Leader, Simon Ekpa

The Senate has called for the extradition of Simon Ekpa back to Nigeria from Finland to face the full weight of the law over his antics which it said is corrupting the minds of youths in the South East.

In the motion which was sponsored by Senator Osita Izunaso, Imo State, and co-sponspored by all senators from the Southeast on Wednesday, called for the end to the sit-at-home which has bred unrest in the Southeast region.

Ekpa, a Nigerian who resides in Finland, following the detention of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, has been calling for sit-at-home to protest the continued detention of IPOB leader and inciting the youths in the zone to shutdown markets and other commercial activities on Mondays.

The students of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree (OSPOLY) found themselves shut out of their citadel of learning on Tuesday morning, July 25, as the academic staff union of the institution decided to lock up the school entrance in protest of the suspension of the school’s rector, Dr. Tajudeen Odetayo.

The Osun State government led by governor Ademola Adeleke suspended the rector who was first appointed by the former governor of the state, Gboyega Oyetola.

Resident Doctors Declare Indefinite Nationwide Strike

Medical doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) have embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike.

The doctors declared the strike on Tuesday night during the National Executive Council meeting in Lagos.

The President of the association, Dr. Orji Emeka Innocent, said the strike will commence at midnight on Tuesday.

This platform reports that the strike comes after a two-week ultimatum was given to the Federal Government by NARD for its demands to be implemented.

The Federal Government has denied media reports that the tuition fees in Federal Universities have been increased in the country.

In a statement on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications and Strategy, Dele Alake, the government said the reports are inaccurate and incorrect.

Alake said the government is aware that some universities recently announced an increase in the amount payable by students on sundry charges.

He, however, said the universities only increased discretionary charges for hostel accommodation, registration, laboratory and other charges, saying that the hike does not involve tuition fees.
