INEC Announces New Dates For 2023 Elections, Releases Election Guidelines

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced new dates for the conduct of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu who announced the change during a press conference in Abuja on Saturday said the new dates became necessary as a result of the 2022 amended electoral act recently signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

It was reported according to what the INEC Chairman said that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, February 25, 2023, instead of the earlier announced February 18 date.

Also, the governorship and state houses of assembly elections will hold on March 11, 2023.

Buhari Govt To Evacuate Nigerians Fleeing Ukraine To Poland

The Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government has concluded necessary arrangements to evacuate Nigerians in Ukraine to Poland.

This was made known in a public notice by the Embassy of Nigeria in Warsaw, Poland.

According to the notice, embassy officials and volunteers would be at the Polish-Ukrainian borders to pick up Nigerians fleeing the crisis ridden country.

The embassy asked Nigerians to present 02-953, Kosiarzy 22B, 02-956 Warszawa as the destination address to the Polish border officials.

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba has ordered the immediate posting and redeployment of some senior police officers into various positions.

The posting and redeployment are occasioned by the vacuum created due to the retirement of some senior officers within the Police force after the completion of their statutory years of service.

A statement on Saturday by the acting Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the postings are with immediate effect.

Those affected by the postings are AIG Bala Zama Senchi who is now the acting DIG Department of Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja and DIG representing North-West Geo-political zone.

Nigerian Govt Lists Four Borders Its Citizens Stuck In Ukraine Can Use To Cross Into Poland

The federal government of Nigeria on Saturday listed four borders that are recommended for Nigerians trying to escape from war-hit Ukraine.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa gave the update in a video posted on her Twitter account amidst the ongoing clash between Russian and Ukrainian military forces.

According to her, there may be up to eight borders available but there are four which the government has recommended and would have officials waiting to receive Nigerians on the other end.

The listed boarders are Hrebenne-Rawa Ruska, Korczowa-Krakowiec, Medyka-Szeginie and Budomierz-Hurszew.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Saturday paid a visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

It was gathered that the Waziri of Adamawa is at Obasanjo’s home to discuss his presidential bid in 2023.

Atiku arrived the penthouse residence located within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) around 10am and went straight into a closed door meeting with Obasanjo.

It was reported that Russia has been unleashing terror attacks on Ukraine since Thursday and over a hundred citizens of the country have been killed.

However, despite a warning by Russian President Vladimir Putin that no world leader, or nation should intervene in the ongoing war, President Biden on Saturday instructed State Department to release the sum of $600m (£448m) in “immediate military assistance’’ to Ukraine.

The Democrat instructed the secretary of state Antony Blinken to release up to $350m “in defence articles and services of the Department of Defense, and military education and training” under the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961.

FG Expresses Anger As Poland Blocks Nigerians Fleeing Ukraine

The Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government has condemned Poland for stopping Nigerians fleeing the crisis in Ukraine from entering into their country.

It was reported that Polish Border Security had turned back only Nigerians from those trying to flee the crisis instigated by Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

A source at the border told this news publication that he alongside six other Nigerian students were turned back while other nationalities were let through.

Speaking during a meeting with envoys of European Union countries, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama said the government is receiving emergency calls from Nigerians fleeing Ukraine for Poland.

One Dead As NDLEA Operatives Clash With Thugs In Lagos

One person has been reported dead during a clash between operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and some hoodlums in Lagos Island.

The NDLEA officials engaged the thugs in a gun duel during a raid on camps of some drug peddlers in the area on Saturday morning.

It was learned that the officials of the anti-narcotic agency were trying to arrest and seize hard drugs when they were attacked by thugs.

This development comes days after some NDLEA officials arrested two singers, Zinoleesky and Mohbad from their residence in Lekki for being in possession of hard drugs

Withdraw Troops From Ukraine Now, Buhari Govt Tells Russia

The Nigerian Government has appealed to Russian President, Vladimir Putin to immediately withdraw troops from Ukraine and stop the military invasion of the country.

This was made known by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, after a meeting with the envoys of the G7 countries in Nigeria.

Onyeama asked both the Russian and Ukrainian governments to embrace peace and diplomatic measures to address the ongoing war between the two nations.

The minister stated the Muhammadu Buhari government will support every effort being made to stop the aggression and Russian troops to return to Russia.

Goods Worth Milions Of Naira Destroyed As Fire Razes Popular Lagos Market

A fire outbreak has occurred at a shopping plaza in the popular Ladipo spare parts market, Oshodi area of Lagos State.

It was learned that shops and valuables worth millions of naira were destroyed in the fire incident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, February 26, 2023.

Reacting to the tragic incident, an official of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said a one-storey building, the Aguiyi Ironsi Plaza, was razed by the fire.

The LASEMA official added that no casualty was recorded in the inferno because it happened early in the morning.
