Confession time

I don’t want to manage people.

There I said it.

I don’t want to be a director. I don’t want to sit in meetings all day. I don’t want to be on call at 9 pm. I don’t want to work weekends.

Oh and whilst we’re at it, I don’t want to commute 2 hours to work, or have to wear suit trousers, or network in the evening.

I thought I was destined for a life of emptiness, a constant battle of expectations until I had a name for this desire:

The one-person business model.

Lean into what you actually want

Some people want to climb the ladder.

Some people like managing people, making big decisions, presenting to groups, and using words like ‘blue sky thinking’ (okay I’m kidding).

And that’s fine. That’s great. It’s important that the world has people that want to climb the corporate ladder and be the next director of this that or the other.

That’s great.

The problem comes when you don’t actually want to do that but you think it’s the only way. You think it’s the only avenue you’ve got if you want to make money and live a good life.

It’s not.

Welcome to the one-person business model

Largely popularised by Paul Jarvis’s great book ‘Company of One’ people all over the world are starting to understand a new way of working.

A new idea is seeping into the mainframe and starting to take over. It’s that people, yes just like you and I, can create a one-person business, work from home, sell our skills and live a good life.

How incredible is that?

Can you imagine? Working on your own timeline, your own projects, your own passions. It’s a huge shift from the idea that you have to work a job for the next 50 years and actually live when you retire.

Instead, people are becoming their own investments.

The internet makes it possible

Building an audience first is the key.

That’s the art of writing or filming content and holding people’s attention. You need to know how to captivate an audience, tell a story and build a following.

It’s hard work.

But if you can do that, you’re practically on the home stretch. Build a big audience, solve problems for them, and create a business.

People all over the world are making money selling products and services to audiences they’ve built on the internet. The size of the internet will blow you away.

It makes this idea of working for yourself, possible.

And it becomes its own flywheel

When you work for yourself and you start to see things differently.

You’re the only person responsible for your income, it means you have to look after yourself. It means you start optimising for your health, wealth and well-being.

You ask yourself questions like:

How can I have the most productive morning possible?
How can I build long-term wealth with my business?
How can I maximise my energy?
All of these questions lead to a better version of you. I’m healthier now than I’ve ever been. I’m making more money than I ever have. I’m happier than I’ve ever been.

With each iteration, you get closer to unlocking your potential

I feel like I’m levelling up every month at the minute.

Every 30 days feel like a hard reset. I learn something new, I’ve changed the way I look at the world, and I feel like I’m rising higher and higher. It’s all because I’ve started to bet on myself.

I’ve proved to myself I can achieve my wildest dreams so the world is my oyster. Each day feels like an opportunity to build, improve and learn. It’s quite incredible really.

That’s the power of the one-person business model.
