5. NIN Now Mandatory To Acces All Govt Services – NIMC

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has declared that Nigerians will henceforth be required to provide their National Identification Number (NIN) to access any government services. This is as the agency noted that its enrollment, verification, and other identification systems are working optimally.

According to the NIMC, the development became necessary to curb excesses of some citizens taking advantage of the facility by using its forged document to seek collaboration with state and local governments. It noted that the individuals do this to collect money to enroll and issue the NIN, especially for students in primary and secondary schools across the country. The commission said it has not sent “anyone nor any organization to do so,” adding that the public should report such individuals or organizations doing so.

It further reassured Nigerians of the provision of top-notch identification services in line with the government’s effort at providing a reliable, sustainable, and verifiable foundational identification system for all Nigerians and legal residents.

6. Court Takes Fresh Action On Jailing IGP Usman Alkali Baba For Contempt

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the nation’s capital city has withdrawn its order instructing the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba to be committed to prison for contempt.

Justice Bolaji Olajuwon, in a ruling on Wednesday, said fresh evidence before the court shows the IGP has partially complied with the initial court order hence no need for the punishment.

The court had on November 29, 2022, ordered the IGP to be imprisoned for three months over failure to comply with an earlier order directing the reinstatement of Patrick Okoli, who was compulsorily retired as a police officer.

Okoli was compulsorily retired in 1992 while serving in the Bauchi State Command as a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) by the Police Council (now Police Service Commission (PSC), which claimed to have acted under Decree 17 of 1984, a decision the court voided in the October 2011 judgment.

Back in November, Justice Olajuwon noted that though the Police Service Commission (PSC) recommended Okoli’s reinstatement into the Force, a decision that was affirmed by the court, the IGP refused to comply with the order.

The court had also ordered the payment of N10m to the applicant, being special and general damages for the unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional denial of his rights and privileges as a Senior Officer of the Nigeria Police Force from 1993 till date. IGP Baba in his reaction to the court ruling approached the court to file a motion to set aside the contempt proceeding and committal order.

The spokesman for the force, Olumiyiwa Adejobi in a statement released on Thursday, December 1 said the IGP filed the motion before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

However, Justice Olajuwon on Wednesday, December 14, submitted that the IGP has substantially complied with the initial court order so the application by the IGP, seeking the vacation of the committal order, “is worthy of sympathetic consideration.”

7. EFCC, Police Speak On Viral Video Of Old Naira Notes Discovered In Benue

The trending video of a discovery alleged to be that of old naira notes in Benue State has attracted a reaction from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as well as the Benue State Police Command.

A video that has gone viral on the internet alleged that some old naira notes were discovered inside a big container around Wadata market in Benue on Tuesday.

A voice in the video also stated that the discovery was made by the EFCC. However, speaking on the viral video, an EFCC official who was quoted by The Punch on condition of anonymity said the sacks do not contain money as widely speculated.

The source said the anti-graft agency deployed its men when it got information about the discovery but on getting to the scene, it was discovered that they were condemned notes from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) that had already been cut into pieces and squeezed. Similarly, the Benue State Police Command in a statement released by its spokesperson, Catherine Anene said the purported naira notes were wasted papers obtained from the CBN.

The Police spokesperson added that the owner of the container when contacted also provided a CBN license for waste management which allows him to process the waste into mosquito repellants. Anene, therefore, dismissed the reports about the huge discovery of old naira notes as misleading.
