For a couple years of my corporate career I have heard comments like “why didn’t they promote you this year? you did so well!”, “why have you been doing the same “junior” job for so long? You could do more!”, “Why don’t you do anything more advanced? You know you could do it”. Despite of positive feedback, I somehow couldn’t move to the next step. Being very grateful for so many supporting people in my life, I was feeling stuck and just invisible.

I was doing a lot of overtime, training regularly, studying various things every weekend. Throughout the time I was observing my friends and colleagues (who often seemed to try much less hard) getting promotions, salary increases and fit body. Yes, you guessed it right — I did struggle to get any of it. A lot.

Suddenly, within last 7 months I have changed my career to data science, got my dream job 2 weeks after bootcamp completion, filled my resume with high paid skills, met fantastic new people and multiplied the chance of doubling my income within next 2 years significantly. I even started to lose some weight.

You might wonder how it happened.

Well, Following these rules made me get control over my achievements.

1. Focus on one thing at a time

I am sure that everyone has heard this statement before. Me too, many times. Multitasking is a scam, but I have always believed that I can do more. Working on just one goal at the same time seemed boring. So many things seemed to be so interesting and worth trying and learning. The constant feeling of urgency didn’t help either. I still agree that there is so much to try out and that the humans’ life is way too short! This rule however is about quality, not quantity. As simple as that.

The probability that you will accomplish one goal within given time (be realistic while setting deadlines :- ) ) is just much higher than when you are distracted by many other activities. The quality of your work will be much better, too. You might even complete it in time. After years of working on “everything”, you will finally get some taste of satisfaction, caused by bringing this one thing to the end. This will boost your self confidence and give back control over your life. You will start believing that anything is possible for you! And it really is! Step by step. Days will pass by anyway. Make each of them count. Focus.

2. Always show up

Never underestimate the benefits of showing up. Nobody can give their 100% all the time, on every training and every lecture. The fact, that you are not ready to do your best today, should not be an excuse of not showing up at all. You will still remember something just after attending the lesson. Your body will still profit from the movements, even if you don’t break another record.

3. Be afraid and do it

New things are scary. Moving to a new city, changing career, building a new relationship. However, people rarely regret trying something new. Most of the time they feel guilty about missed chances and opportunities.

4. Don’t stop until you are proud…

In other words — never give up. You rarely know how closed you are to the last step in your journey. Don’t try to impress others, they will never know how much you have gone through. Impress yourself — this will be the greatest and most satisfying achievement.

5. …. but learn how to rest

This one is still a challenge for me, but it is so important not to put it to the end of the list. You can obviously run every day for 2 hours, but if you do so, you will get injured very soon. This will ban you from running for couples of months and can have even lifetime health consequences. Was it worth it? Of course not.

Plan time for rest. Go out on a date, meet your friends regularly, go out for a walk. Eat your breakfast without distractions. All these activities are not waste of time. They give you energy, sense of self respect and contentment. Treat them as valuable steps on journey to your goal.

6. Don’t compare yourself

Not all the people start from the same level. Not everyone is equally privileged. There will be always someone prettier, someone smarter and someone richer. Does it mean that you should stop trying? Of course not, we all know that. At the same time so many of us spend hours, scrolling through social media, getting every day even more frustrated that the life we are living looks so much different than the “successful” life of others.

Think about your last years of life. How did they look? How much progress did you make? A lot? Enough? This is fantastic! No progress at all? This is no reason to be sad, frustrated and annoyed that other people have already gone much farer. There is still so many days ahead of you! Forgive yourself — very probably, at that moment you simply didn’t know any better way to accomplish what you wanted or you didn’t know what you actually wanted. Then plan your next step. Just one. All at your own pace.
