Did you see Oprah interview Adele? Talk about powerhouse presence.

Those two women are forces to be reckoned with. {Understatement.}

It took me back to Oprah’s 2018 Golden Globes speech. Three years ago, I remembered thinking how her undeniable presence and mastery outclass all of the jackasses we hear from regularly. And now, here we are 3 years later — exponential jackasses.

But what is it that grabs your attention and refuses to let go? Is it the hopefulness she instills and the degree to which we need it?

Is it that she invokes a better, more civil world?

Is it that she invokes a better, more civil world?

When Oprah speaks, a tangible electrical current vibrates and whispers, “we got this, let’s change the world.” That’s power.

Presence is Power

Oprah has unparalleled gravitas and command. That said, wisdom doesn’t work for everyone. Sometimes presence is about inspiration, enthusiasm, or charisma. Other times, it’s complexity, intrigue, and intelligence.

Captivating an audience is a skill — it’s a quality that sets you apart — but it’s essential to do it your way. That’s why authenticity tops the list.

It’s also important to remember, it’s not about you. Developing presence is a way to make people feel a certain way in your presence. It’s an opportunity to make them feel seen, put them at ease, hold space for them, their ideas, or their emotions, and sometimes, it’s letting them borrow your light to shine brighter too.
