The little book that completely and positively changed my lifeĀ
Without a focus on relationships, I wouldnāt even be in commercial real estate. I got my start through the right connection at the right time, and my success has blossomed through the relationships that Iāve been able to create and nurture over the years. Today, Iām going to look at just a few of the reasons why building relationships with others is essential to success.

1. Thereās More to Business Than Making Money
Iāll be honest; when I began my career, I was young and very interested in how much money there was to be made in the industry. But one truth Iāve discovered is that deals are fleeting. Their monetary results are ultimately the fruit of intentional relationships, often built long before a monetary opportunity exists.
This has taught me the incredible importance of prioritizing relationships before you need them. The type of person who only tries to connect with others when there is something to gain will eventually be known for doing that. Conversely, if you consistently choose to foster connections even when there is no impending benefit, youāll be known as someone who cares for others.
IN ACTION: Make an effort to truly get to know people without expectations for the future. If you go in with the intent of getting to know others and making friends, youāll undoubtedly come away with some incredible connections that might lead to some incredible deals down the road.

2. Your Reputation Is Everything
Iāve found that reputation is far more important than your achievements or even who you know. People generally want to work with people who treat them well. But if your name elicits negative feelings due to the reputation that precedes it, youāre more likely to be passed over for mutually beneficial partnerships.
Knowing this, Iām extremely intentional about how I treat other people. I know that my name is on the door; and therefore, my reputation not only paints my public image but also influences the success of the business Iāve spent my life building.
IN ACTION: It may seem overly simple, but building a good reputation starts with the Golden Rule. If you routinely treat others in the same ways that you would want to be treated, your reputation will clearly reflect that.
3. Thereās Always More to Learn
Money is the least of what you can gain from relationships. You can learn endlessly through others. Every person brings a different knowledge base, skill set, and history of life experiences to the table. The more you invest in truly knowing people, the more likely you are to learn something from them that you might not discover on your own.
You can only learn from people if youāre willing to go beyond surface level and genuinely connect. You also have to be open to what they have to show you. Itās easy to hit a stride and feel like an expert, but there will always be things left to learn. Stay green enough to take in fresh ideas and apply them to your own growth.
IN ACTION: Surround yourself with people you can learn from and be open to doing so. Stay engaged in the lifelong search for deeper understanding. To stop learning is to stagnate.

4. Inclusion and Vulnerability Foster Progress
The commercial real estate business isnāt a highly diverse industry. As a Black man, I build relationships with people who donāt look like me every single day. Even if people donāt seem overly eager to know me, I try to get to know them. I put myself out there in an authentic way whenever I get the chance.
Iāve seen problematic mindsets change partially as a result of my willingness to be vulnerable with those who are unlike me. You might not always be met with open arms, but offering others that chance to truly connect will ultimately yield the best possible result. The more people that connect on a human level, the more empathetic humanity becomes. It may sound dramatic, but every time you can choose vulnerability and inclusion over false appearances and discrimination youāre contributing to progress.
IN ACTION: Keep putting yourself out there and seeking connection. If someone doesnāt receive you, thatās on them. Itās your job to simply be as authentic and open as you can in all situations.
In summary, every interaction is an opportunity to plant a seed. With time, regular watering, and a little luck, you might see a harvest. But ignore the seed, deprive it, or even pour poison on it, and you wonāt reap any goodness. In short, you get out of relationships what you choose to put into them, and Iāve never regretted investing in human connection.
