1. Not walking your talk

Walking your talk means aligning your actions with your words and beliefs. When you say one thing and do another, it undermines your credibility. People around you lose trust in you since they cannot fathom the authentic you and what you stand for. This makes it difficult to build meaningful relationships with colleagues and superiors. Also, when you fail to follow through on your promises and live up to your commitments, you may miss opportunities to progress.

Inconsistency in your actions and words and failing to live up to your own standards disconnects you from your values and principles and can rob you of your confidence. You may feel lost and directionless, not knowing where you are headed or what you want to accomplish in life.

2. Spreading yourself too thin

Each day you have a limited time at hand, and there’s only so much you can do. If you say yes to everything thrown your way, you’ll not only spread yourself too thin but also get physically and mentally exhausted.

The thing with trying to do too many things at once is that you are unable to give enough time and focus on any one particular thing for a long. As a result, you have many incomplete tasks without making any significant progress on your goals.

Success requires taking things to completion and moving forward. When you leave things half-done and have loads of pending work, you get frustrated and are tempted to give up on your goals. This is the perfect recipe for overwhelm.

To work productively, it’s imperative to prioritize your tasks and be selective about what you choose to do. You must draw your boundaries and train yourself to refuse things that don’t serve you or are a source of distraction.

3. Being impatient

Success doesn’t happen instantly, nor do goals get achieved by snapping your fingers. Anything worthwhile takes time and requires patience and persistence in equal measure.

Impatience can lead to a lack of focus, preventing you from giving full attention to the task at hand. When you’re in a hurry, you can miss important details, leading to mistakes and missed opportunities. When you’re impatient, you avoid giving proper time to go through various options and can thus make hasty decisions. Impatience can also lead to giving up too soon, which prevents you from achieving your goals.

The high-achievers and highly accomplished people understand the importance of patience and therefore keep focused on their goals and work with diligence and perseverance.

4. Thinking you know it all

No matter how well-informed or knowledgeable you are, no one can claim to know it all. There will always be gaps and lacunae which you must work on and continuously fill if you want to excel in your field.

‘You cannot pour more into a glass that is already full,’ goes the oft-repeated saying. Believing you already know everything there is to know about a particular subject closes the lid on your learning new things, being receptive to fresh ideas, and adapting to new situations.

When you think you know everything, you become overconfident and take things for granted. This careless attitude keeps you from preparing yourself for challenges or obstacles which can’t result in poor decision-making and making mistakes that ultimately result in failure.

Successful people are mindful of their shortcomings and limitations. They don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed, nor do they keep themselves from learning new things and regularly upgrading their knowledge, and keeping themselves updated. This empowers them to build themselves up for success and stay ahead of the pack.

5. Not holding yourself accountable

Failing to take responsibility and hold yourself accountable is a bad habit that hinders your progress and prevents you from succeeding at what you do.

When you refuse to take ownership of your actions, you may fall into a negative pattern of making excuses or blaming others. This prevents you from realizing your mistakes and learning from them so that you are liable to repeat the same mistakes. Also, avoiding accountability damages your relationships with others, as people lose trust in you and start doubting your credibility.

There’s no shame in owning your actions. Acknowledging your mistakes makes you more self-aware and provides valuable insights that enable you to learn from your experiences and help in personal growth.

To kick out destructive habits and change the pattern from negative to positive, begin with one habit at a time, particularly the most significant one. Start small by taking manageable steps and consistently practicing them. It takes time and effort to eliminate bad habits, but with patience and persistence, you can rid yourself of negativity and cultivate positive habits.
