Build Good Habits to Improve Your Life

Most of us want to improve our lives. But in order to boost our lives, we have to build strong, good habits. However, that doesn’t mean you have to create dozens of habits to get to your goal. Instead, you only have to focus on changing a few keystone habits that will have a notable impact on your life.

According to Charles Duhigg, the author of “The Power of Habits,” these keystone habits spark “chain reactions that help other good habits take hold.” To put it another way, building a keystone habit is like a domino effect. If you flick the first domino, it will lead to the toppling and collapsing of all the other dominos, which leaves things very different from how they were in the first place.

Just like that, when you focus on building a few keystone habits, it will automatically lead to multiple positive behaviors and certain effects in your life.

#1: Reading

Read Books

I really can’t stress enough how important it is to read. It is one of the most critical and crucial keystone habits you must have to advance in every area of your life.

As humans, we learn from each other and from our surroundings. For example, if you are in a group that likes to go out to the party every single week, then I can tell that you are a party person. If you surround yourself with smoking people, you are more likely to have a smoking habit.

People learn each other’s behaviors and adopt each other’s mindsets after spending a large amount of time with each other.

You’re the average of the five people you spend most of your time with. — Jim Rohn

That’s where reading comes in. By reading the books of successful people, you are adopting their mindset. And the knowledge you get from reading can be applied in your real life.

The more knowledge you have, the better equipped you are to tackle any problem and obstacle you’ll ever face in the future.

That’s why reading is, without a doubt, one of the most powerful keystone habits out there.

#2: Exercising

Building Muscles By Exercising

Research shows that regular exercise (at least three times per week) can lead to a range of positive behaviors. It is a keystone habit that triggers most people to increase their self-confidence, start eating better, be less stressed, have more emotional control, consume less alcohol, smoke less, and be more productive and focused at work.

In addition, it can give us a better mood and better sleep quality.

In other words, exercise gives us tons of benefits and upgrades other areas of our life as well, making exercise a powerful and valuable keystone habit.

Even James Clear, the author of “The Atomic Habits” applauds the perks of exercising. He exclaimed:

“Fitness is the keystone habit that puts the rest of my life in place. When I workout, other things naturally fall into place. Exercise naturally pushes me towards my best self.” — James Clear

That’s true. When I exercise on a regular basis, I feel confident. I feel like I can accomplish whatever I set out to do. And I also have more energy and focus, and to top it all off, I perform better than my peers when I’m working with them.

#3: Journaling

Journaling In The Morning

For me, journaling is by far the best habit that helped me become a better person, and I’m glad I built this habit long, long ago. It helps me plan and strategize for the future, makes me more focused and organized, reflects on my behaviors, actions, and past mistakes, and leads me to become a happier, more productive person.

For most people, journaling is just writing down your thoughts on a piece of paper. However, journaling can bring far more benefits.

To make journaling a fantastic keystone habit, you can add a few other essential elements than just writing down and recording your thoughts. This includes

  1. Identifying and writing down your #1 biggest goal
  2. Creating step-by-step plans for achieving your goals
  3. Reflecting on what you are currently doing
  4. Expressing Daily Gratitude
  5. Writing down your “Lessons Learned”
  6. Recording your “Wins,” and so on.

By having a journal, you have more clarity on what you’re about to do, increasing your focus exponentially. It also builds awareness of what you are doing so that you can readjust if needed. Ultimately, that keystone habit alone can improve your overall performance and level up your entire life.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that when it comes to creating good habits, you shouldn’t rush and try to build three or more habits at the same time. It’s better to focus on one step at the time.

Remember: you don’t need to create many good habits, you just have to focus on the keystone habits that can tremendously transform your life to the next level.
