And look your fear in the eye

Everyone has some fear or the other, and the thing about fear is that you cannot wish it away. The more you run away from it, the more it tries to control you, and you find it difficult to free yourself from its clutches.

“Fears are nothing more than a state of mind.”

-Napoleon Hill

You get the point.

When you stand tall in the face of fear, you’ll see it melting away right in front of your eyes. That’s because, most times, the fear is only in mind.

The only time when fear is** valid** is when there’s a threat or a real-life situation like a life-threatening condition, a health scare, or when your world is falling apart. The whole purpose of fear is to keep you out of harm’s way.

“The more you feed your fear, the bigger it will grow and the more deep-seated it will get.”

So if you don’t want to take things from bad to worse, stop fearing fear. Whether it is the fear of insects, animals, or humans, of losing a job, going broke or getting dumped, of appearing in an exam, public speaking, or meeting new people, of gaining weight, looking ugly, or growing old, do away with being scared.

“One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn’t do.”

-Henry Ford

Here are three simple but powerful reasons to face your fear and stop giving it power over you.

1. Fear helps you know what is real and what isn’t

Fear is most times the handiwork of your mind. It imagines negative situations, worst-case scenarios, and failure in every endeavor that you undertake and scares you under the garb of alerting you with the result; you hesitate to move forward and get on with pursuing your goals. With the repeated warnings that result, you fall into the trap of anxiety and self-doubt and start questioning every action of yours.

But the moment you_ draw a line_ and refuse to cow down to fear, ignore the warning that the fear sends you, and dare to do what you want to do, you succeed in punching fear right in the face and defeating it. It is in such moments of courage and fearlessness you realize that the stories that your mind told about fear were all false; you can separate reality from fiction.

“Courage is not the absence of fear, but triumph over fear.”

-Nelson Mandela

2. Overcoming fear boosts your confidence

Fear prevents you from doing things you want to do by making you believe there’s a potential danger in what you want to do, or your action can result in a negative outcome. You, therefore, start playing small and restrict yourself to your comfort zone.

However, when you choose to stand tall in the face of fear and deal with it head-on, your gain confidence, and your self-esteem gets a massive boost. You are no longer fear the negative consequences or are afraid of failure.

Lack of fear frees your mind, unleashes your creativity, and allows you to take calculated risks and seek newer opportunities.

“Being brave isn’t the absence of fear. Being brave is having that fear but finding a way through it.”

-Bear Grylls

3. Facing fear helps you build your coping mechanisms

Fear can cause a significant amount of stress in your life. Many people cave in and become more anxious when fear grips them. But panicking further provides fuel to fear and allows it to grow bigger.

Therefore, to deal with fear, you must develop your personal strategies that will help you manage fear and keep yourself together.

“It’s only when you make up your mind to face the fear that you get yourself working on ways to cope with it.”

Each person has their own way of dealing with fear. Some focus on finding the root cause of their fear and make efforts to fix the problem. In contrast, others channel their energy to handle the emotional aspects of fear and try to mentally relax, practice mindfulness, meditate or ease their anxiety by smiling, remaining calm, and maintaining their composure. Do what suits you best and works for you in dealing with fear.

“Every time your fear is invited up, every time you recognize it and smile at it, your fear will lose some of its strength.”

-Thich Nhat Hanh

In Conclusion

You can either allow fear to rule over you, keep you stuck, and jeopardize your chances of success or you can draw on courage and move past it to chase your dreams.

Tackling your fears boldly will weaken their hold on you and deepen your belief in yourself that you are capable of doing anything you want and can fearlessly live the life of your dreams.

So dare to turn your back on fear and march forward in the direction that takes you to your goals.

“Each of us must confront our fears, come face to face with them. How we handle our fears will determine where we go with the rest of our lives.” -Judy Blume
