Unlearning is the new lifelong learning
Think about all of the people you admire who have succeeded beyond measure. Those you look up to. And historyâs iconic figures who have changed the course of history.
What do they have in common? They doubled down on habits, behaviours actions that made all the difference to their goals.
The word âunlearningâ can have negative connotations. However, it doesnât necessarily mean you are not smart or capable.

Unlearning is letting go of old assumptions, beliefs, patterns, habits, and thought patterns that no longer serve us.
Rather than remaining stagnant in our old ways, we invest our time in building new ones more aligned with who we want to be.

âThe most useful piece of learning for the uses of life is to unlearn what is untrue,â Antisthenes, a Greek philosopher and a pupil of Socrates, said.
Unlearning is taking a new look at something and seeing it differently.
It is an essential process of developing more profound wisdom and self-awareness. And, with the right mindset, unlearning can lead to great success in your life.
âIntelligence is what we learn. Wisdom is what we unlearn,â J.R. Rim said. Here are some things you may want to âunlearnâ to improve your chances of success:
Negative self-talk: How we talk to ourselves can significantly impact our confidence and self-esteem. Negative self-talk can hold us back. Replace negative self-talk with positive affirmations to build confidence.
Complacency: Itâs easy to become complacent when things are going well. However, being too comfortable can prevent you from taking risks and pursuing new opportunities. Start challenging yourself and push yourself outside of your comfort zone.
Perfectionism: Striving for perfection can prevent you from taking action and can lead to procrastination. Accepting imperfection and taking action can help you achieve your goals more effectively.
Limiting beliefs: Self-sabotaging beliefs about ourselves and our abilities become obstacles. Identify, challenge and replace them with more positive and empowering beliefs. Examples of limiting beliefs include âIâm not good enoughâ or âIâm not smart enough.â
Blaming others: Itâs easy to blame others when things go wrong. However, taking responsibility for your actions and decisions is essential to success. Instead of blaming others, focus on taking steps to improve your situation.
Needing approval: Seeking approval from others can be a major obstacle to success. Be confident in your abilities and make decisions based on your values and priorities. Trusting your judgment and relying on your instincts can help you move in the right direction.
Overthinking: Overthinking can lead to analysis paralysis and prevent you from taking action. Trust your intuition and make decisions based on the information you have available. Taking action and making mistakes can often be more beneficial than overthinking and never taking action at all.
All-or-nothing thinking: Itâs a rigid mindset and can prevent you from seeing multiple perspectives. Be open to different possibilities and learn to embrace ambiguity. It can help you adapt to changing circumstances.
Fixed mindset: Being too rigid and inflexible can prevent you from adapting to new situations and taking advantage of new opportunities. Learn to be open to new experiences and see change as an opportunity for growth. Be adaptable and flexible, and embrace change as a natural part of life.
Not taking responsibility for your life: Blaming others for your circumstances or waiting for someone else to solve your problems can prevent you from taking control of your life. Take responsibility for your life and actively work towards creating the life you want.
Setting ambiguous goals: Not setting clear goals can prevent you from making progress. Breaking down your big outcome into smaller, more manageable steps and tracking your progress can help you stay focused and motivated as you work towards something amazing.

Overcommitting yourself: Say no to commitments that donât align with your priorities and set healthy boundaries that allow you to prioritize your goals and well-being.
Ignoring your intuition: Ignoring your intuition and inner guidance can prevent you from making decisions that align with your values and vision for the future. Learn to trust your intuition and cultivate a strong sense of self-awareness.
Relying too heavily on others: Seeking approval and validation can prevent you from living an authentic life. Developing a solid sense of self-confidence and independence can help you achieve greater success and fulfilment in all areas of your life.
Not taking time to reflect: To succeed in life, itâs important to reflect on your experiences and identify what youâve learned and how you can apply that knowledge in the future. Learning to use reflection as a tool for personal growth.
