Naira Scarcity: No Divisive Comments Will Be Tolerated – Police

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has warned groups and individuals against divisive comments capable of heating up the polity and triggering a crisis in the country.

The Force gave the warning in a statement on Saturday released by its Spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

The Force said the warning became important due to the utterances of some persons or groups attempting to instigate the people against the government over the naira crisis.

It, therefore, charged the citizens to remain calm and embrace peace as the Federal Government has assured that the naira and fuel scarcity are being addressed, adding that normalcy will soon be restored.

The statement reads: “Amidst the prevailing outcries and reactions on the new naira policy in the country, the Nigeria Police Force has deemed it necessary to caution groups and individuals against divisive comments and utterances capable of heating up the polity and triggering a crisis in the nation.

“The NPF, therefore, charges the citizenry of Nigeria to remain calm and embrace peace as the Federal Government has assured that it is taking the bull by the horn, assiduously to address the scarcity of naira and fuel and restore normalcy in all sectors.”

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, hasd stated that his successor, Governor Godwin Obaseki has no right to order his arrest.

Addressing journalists in Edosstate on Friday, the former Edo governor said the allegation made against him by Obaseki was ridiculous and baseless.

Recall that Obaseki had accused Oshiomhole of masterminding the demonstrations and violent protests in the state over the controversial naira swap policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN on Wednesday, but the former governor denied the allegation.

Addressing the allegation in a chat with reporters, Oshiomhole said it is only the Nigeria Police Force that can investigate anyone they deemed a person of interest and that if found wanting, they may be invited for questioning.

The APC Senatorial candidate in Edo North said he would be surprised if the police now collect orders from the governor.

The chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Femi Fani-Kayode, has commended Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State for his stance on the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The CBN had set a deadline of February 10 for the phase-out of the old N200, N500, and N1000 naira notes, but some APC governors challenged the directive at the Supreme Court.

The apex court granted an ex parte application filed by the Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara State governments, which prevented the CBN from effecting its ban on the old notes pending the hearing and determination of the case on Wednesday, February 15.

However, in a nationwide broadcast on Thursday, President Muhammadu Buhari directed the CBN to release the old N200 note, while the old N500 and N1,000 notes would remain invalid.

Reacting in a statewide broadcast, El-Rufai said the old N500 and N1,000 notes remain legal tender in his state and warned that Buhari’s directive was against the Supreme Court order.

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) also accused some presidential aides of working against the APC’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

Obasanjo’s In-Law, John Abebe Bags Seven-Years Jail Term For Laundering, Forgery

John Abebe, an in-law of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has bagged a seven-year jail term for laundering and forgery.

Ikeja Special Offences Court on Saturday presided by Justice Mojisola Dada sentenced Abebe to seven-year imprisonment for laundering and forgery.

Justice Dada handed the judgement after it was established that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and convicted him accordingly.

The judge, however, handed Abebe an option of a fine of a million to be paid within 30 days in lieu of imprisonment.

Recall that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Abebe, who is a younger brother to the late former First Lady, Stella Obasanjo, for forgery.

The prosecution led by Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) arraigned the convict on July 26, 2018, on a four-count charge of forgery, fabricating evidence, using fabricated evidence, and attempting to pervert the course of justice before the Special Offences Court in Ikeja.

According to him, Buhari was wrongly advised on the matter and the happening can lead to anarchy in Nigeria.

Reacting, however, Shaibu said if Keyamo truly believed that the President erred, he has no business remaining a part of the administration.

Describing Keyamo as a hypocrite, Shaibu noted that Keyamo had in the past defended Buhari’s decision to ignore court orders on the basis of national security.

Naira Scarcity: Sanwo-Olu Sends Message To Lagosians Amid Protests

Governor Bababjide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has appealed to Lagosians to continue to keep calm in the face of harsh challenges from the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The governor made the appeal on Saturday morning, while briefing newsmen on the state of the nation, at Lagos House, Marina.

Sanwo-Olu directed security personnel to be on red alert to forestall possible protests and violence arising from the current naira crisis across the state.

The governor disclosed that the state government has commenced measures to cushion the effects of the naira scarcity, saying that the crisis will soon be over.

Sanwo-Olu admonished the people to be their brother’s keeper and ‘do everything we can to contribute to lessening the hardships faced by our fellow Lagosians’.

He also warned against attacks on properties, whether public or private, saying ‘law enforcement agents have received clear instructions to take full control and ensure zero tolerance for any and all acts of arson, violence and destruction’.
