A great life is built with small, good choices.

We all know that making tiny, good choices can compound and lead to massive success, but it’s hard to make these good choices each and every day.

It’s tough enough to make a small change, let alone stick with it for the long haul.

And on those days when we don’t feel like doing anything, it’s even harder to muster up the energy to do something good for ourselves.

But we all know success doesn’t happen in an instant. Overnight successes are a myth. It happens through the progression of lots of little successes, strung together over time.

So if you want to build something big. If you have a vision, a dream, or even just a clearly defined end goal, the question is not how you can make that happen right now, or tomorrow.

The question is: “What habits can I put into place that will allow that end goal to manifest itself?”

These are the 13 tiny habits and choices you can make that really make the difference in a life of fulfillment and happiness, versus a life that comes up short.

1| Wake up when you say you’re going to wake up.

When you set that alarm the night before, you’re promising yourself you’re going to get up at that time. Keep that promise to yourself.

Don’t roll back over and get comfortable again. Get up and get moving.

2| Go view art as much as possible

Nobody gets inspired sitting inside on the couch or at a desk all day.

Go to museums. Read books. Go listen to live music. Go out and get inspired and let the talent of the world wow you.

Here’s a picture of a mural I snapped at the Chicago Museum of Art to get you started.

3| Practice daily affirmations

Once per day, make it a habit to say something nice to yourself.

Be kind to yourself just as you would your friends. Be your own hype man or woman. You’re crushing it out there, never forget it!

4| Eat mindfully

I’m not saying never enjoy a cheeseburger, but you do need to eat healthy.

Otherwise you’ll find yourself hurting constantly and unable to move well much earlier in life.

Don’t overindulge either. Even healthy foods can be bad if we eat too many.

5| Have Fun

Life’s too short to be serious all the time.

When was the last time you watched a movie?
When was the last time you laughed until you cried?
When was the last time you got so lost in a book you lost track of time?
Explore your curiosities. You have one life. Work hard and build something awesome. But enjoy yourself along the way.

6| Dress How You Want To

Don’t dress how you think your family, friends, or society deems you should.

Fashion is one of the best ways to express our personality. Dress in a way that makes you feel confident and secure. And show your true self.

7| Track Your Habits

Write down a few non-negotiables for every single day.

A few of mine:

Read for 10 or minutes
Journal
Brush my teeth 2 times
Walk 10,000+ steps
Write for at least 10 minutes
Then once a day check in with yourself and make sure you’re completing these activities.

You can’t just have little tiny habits or choices, you must obey them.

8| Read

This is on my habit tracking check list for a reason.

Step away from the TV, Netflix, and Social Media. Read work from great authors that sparks excitement and inspiration inside of you.

Reading strengthens your mind and brings happiness.

9| Surround Yourself With High-Quality People

Your network is your net worth.

It can be tough, but ditch the friends and family that don’t believe in your goals, don’t want what’s best for you, or aren’t dreaming as big as you are.

Surround yourself with like-minded people that are also aiming to achieve an amazing life full of love and fulfillment.

10| Exercise

The benefits of exercise are endless.

You’ll sleep better, feel better, and even poop better.

You don’t have to go the gym every day. Do some pushups, go for a walk, or jog for 5 minutes.

Even the little exercises make a big difference.

11| Touch Base With a Friend Daily

The older we get, the more lonely we are more likely to become.

That’s because people stop touching base with all of their friends, and lose touch over time.

Then it’s too late to reconnect.

Try to shoot a text, send a voice memo, or call someone that’s important to you every day. Stay in touch.

12| Journal

Keep a small journal and write in it each day.

Even if it’s just one sentence, check in with yourself, just as you would your friends.

My favorite journal is James Clear’s Habit Tracking Journal.

This will let you track those habits we talked about and keep in touch with yourself.

13| Act

If you have a goal, do something about it.

The biggest procrastination people implement is never feeling like they are “ready” for something.

Action is better than hoarding knowledge forever. Start the business, buy the instrument, write the book.

You will learn more by doing than by sitting around waiting.
