Many people focus on making their boss happy but neglect themselves. If you want a great life, you have to put in the work after you’re done with work. This isn’t easy.

Once you got through the meetings, emails, and coffee chats, all you want is to plop down on the couch and relax. Hitting the gym, reading a book, and watching a video course all seem like perfect tasks for tomorrow. But procrastination doesn’t get you anywhere.

Instead, use these simple strategies to use your time after work productively.

Do This To Avoid Procrastination

Human behavior is predictable.

The easier something is, the more likely we are to do it. This explains why you hug the couch when you get home, but you can also use this effect to stay productive. All you need is a simple plan.

When I finish work, I have already made a list of what I have to do. No extra thinking or finding excuses. All I have to do is execute.

You won’t make great plans when you’re tired after work, so write them down the night before.

Commit yourself to success when you have the drive, follow up when it’s time.

Keep Up the Momentum To Make It Easy

Your day is like a snowball rolling down the hill.

Meter by meter, it gains momentum — you just have to make sure it doesn’t hit a tree and break. Keep it rolling even after work.

When I worked ten-hour days in a physically demanding summer job, I went to the gym straight after. One day, I took a detour through my apartment and sat down for a minute. I never made it to the gym that evening.

Don’t lose the momentum. Do what you have to do, then enjoy your well-earned time off.

Honor Small Commitments So You Make Progress No Matter What

Most people tremendously underestimate the power of small steps.

You don’t have to do it all at once. Doing something is better than doing nothing.

When I come home from the gym, I sit down to read. My goal is ten minutes, yet I often stay glued to the book for much longer. But I wouldn’t have started if the task was too overwhelming.

Commit to ten minutes only — that’s all it takes.

Create an Energizing After-Work Ritual To Recharge Your Batteries

You can’t keep running without recharging — even racecars need pitstops.

The problem is most after-work activities drain you even more. Watching TV. Sinking into the couch. Scrolling through Instagram. If you want to stay productive, you need something more refreshing.

I turn on my favorite techno tunes, hit the gym, take a cold shower, or go for a walk. They all take my mind off the long day but rev up my body. This creates energy rather than consuming it.

Create a fun and refreshing ritual for yourself to recharge the batteries and get shit done.

Cover Your Basic Needs To Give Yourself the Highest Chances of Success

Symptoms and problems are often different.

If you feel exhausted and only make it through the day with the help of an intravenous coffee, nothing you can do after work will help you fix it.

Instead, you need to take care of your basic needs.

A few years ago, I stopped eating fast food, prioritized sleep, made time for regular movement, and started hydrating frequently. My energy levels went through the roof and with them, my motivation to do something after work.

I know these basics sound boring, but they are the basics for a reason — so get them in order.
