The story of success.

In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell challenges this notion and examines the various external factors that contribute to high levels of success.

From family and culture to opportunities and support systems, Malcolm Gladwell argues that success is influenced by complex variables. He also delves into the stories of successful people and unpacks the role that external factors played in their achievements.

So below are several useful lessons from Malcolm Gladwell’s book that changed my life. Hopefully, they’ll do the same for you, too.

Our Background Has A Big Influence On Who We Are

“People don’t rise from nothing…. It is only by asking where they are from that we can unravel the logic behind who succeeds and who doesn’t.”— Malcolm Gladwell

Whenever my dad talks about success, he says, “it’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know.” That’s certainly true. Because in Outliers, Malcolm reinforces that statement with statistics and data.

In Outliers, Malcolm says your legacy, or the impact you have on the world, is not solely determined by talent and hard work. Instead, external factors such as your family background & culture can all play a significant role in shaping your life’s trajectory.

For example, Malcolm points to the success of the Beatles, who were able to achieve global fame as one of the most influential bands in history. He also discusses how the fact that they were born and raised in post-war Liverpool, a city with a thriving music scene, played a crucial role in their rise to fame.

Then, Malcolm Gladwell discusses The Beatles having a “lucky break” by performing regular concerts in Germany. Without that opportunity, he says, they wouldn’t have become anywhere near as successful. Quoting the book:

“The Beatles ended up traveling to Hamburg five times between 1960 and the end of 1962. On the first trip, they played 106 nights, five hours or more a night. On their second trip, they played 92 times. On their third trip, they played 48 times, for a total of 172 hours on stage. The last two Hamburg gigs, in November and December of 1962, involved another 90 hours of performing.

All told, they performed for 270 nights in just over a year and a half. By the time they had their first burst of success in 1964, in fact, they had performed live an estimated twelve hundred times. Do you know how extraordinary this is? Most bands today don’t perform twelve hundred times in their entire careers. The Hamburg crucible is one of the things that set the Beatles apart.”

Practice Is The Only Thing That Leads To Progress

“Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good. It’s the thing you do that makes you good.” — Malcolm Gladwell

“Have you ever heard the saying, practice makes perfect? Well, according to the “10,000 hour rule” proposed by Malcolm Gladwell in Outliers, it takes approximately 10,000 hours of dedicated practice to achieve mastery in a specific field.

The research Malcolm cites fully supports the idea that spending long periods of time on something can increase proficiency. To give you a real-life example, imagine how much knowledge you’d gain if you studied for 10,000 hours. The same can be said for practicing sports, learning to code, or anything else.

You get the idea. If you deliberately practice something for a sustained period of time, the chances of achieving mastery in a specific field exponentially increase. However, it should be noted that other factors, such as motivation, can play a role in your ability to achieve success.

Here’s How My Life Changed After Reading Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell

I used to be a master of excuses. Every morning, I’d wake up feeling miserable and convince myself that my lack of success was everyone else’s fault. Back then, I didn’t want to face the fact that I was responsible for my own choices and actions.

Now, my life is 10x better. I don’t make excuses anymore. Instead, I work hard (in moderation) and try to make daily progress toward my goals. And after reading Malcolm’s book, the trajectory of my writing career has exponentially increased!

Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell opened my eyes to the factors that actually contribute to success. Then, I did everything possible to make my dreams a reality. I’m not exaggerating when I say it changed my life. And hopefully, it’ll do the same for you, too.
