Humans can absorb information through two channels — senses and intuition.

Your senses use touch, taste, smell, sound, and sight to absorb information about the world around you. Intuition/gut feeling is a more innate way of knowing and understanding something.

Dr. Joseph Murphy writes in his book, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind,

“Intuition is a spiritual faculty that does not explain, but simply points the way.”

Gut instinct or intuition is that inner voice that guides you without you being fully aware of it.

It doesn’t need a medium to gather information.

It is your subconscious mind at work trying to protect you from potential danger or encouraging you to work towards a guaranteed result.

But how do you know if your gut is telling you not to do something? How do you know what my intuition is telling me?

Reading numerous books on intuition and speaking with many spiritual professionals, I’ve gained a great deal of insight into this topic.

I have also applied them in my own life to taste great benefits. Being more in tune with your intuition and instincts offers you an edge — Narrowly averting harm, getting lucky, and being sure what to do or say in the moment are just a few ways in which listening to your gut improves your life.

Gut Feeling #1. “You Feel a Sense of Dread”

I was invited to a party I didn’t want to go to. I didn’t know anyone who would be there, and I felt like it would be a waste of my time.

But I decided to go anyway because I didn’t want to seem rude.

As soon as I walked in, I had a sense of dread. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad was going to happen. I tried to enjoy myself, but I couldn’t shake the feeling.

Eventually, I had to leave early because I was so uncomfortable.

It turns out a huge fight broke out at the party not long after I left.

I could have been caught in the middle of it if I had stayed. This clearly signaled that my gut instinct was trying to protect me from danger.

If you ever find yourself feeling a sense of dread or foreboding, it’s important to listen to your intuition and get out of there as quickly as possible.

Gut Feeling #2. “You Just Know Something is Off”

I had a friend who was in a relationship with a guy she met online. They had been dating for a few months, and things seemed to be going well.

But she always had this nagging feeling that something was off.

She couldn’t put her finger on it, but she knew something wasn’t right. She tried to ignore the feeling, but it kept getting stronger and stronger.

Eventually, she decided to listen to her gut and ended the relationship.

It turned out the guy was married and had been using her for a place to stay while his wife was out of town!

If she had ignored her intuition, who knows what could have happened?

Sometimes, you know something is off about a person or situation, even if you can’t explain it.

If you feel something isn’t right, it’s important to trust your gut and stay away from the situation.

Gut Feeling #3. “Your Body is Trying to Tell You Something”

Your body is also a tool that can be used to listen to your intuition. If you’re suddenly feeling nauseous or lightheaded, it might be your body’s way of telling you to get out of there.

I was once in a meeting with my boss and a few other people from work. We were discussing a potential project, and I started to feel nauseous. I tried to ignore it, but the feeling got stronger and stronger. Suddenly, I realized that if I didn’t leave the room, I would throw up.

I quickly excused myself and ran to the bathroom. Fifteen minutes later, there was a gas leak in the room that was making everyone sick. If I had stayed, I could have been seriously injured.

Sometimes, our bodies can react to danger before our minds can process what’s happening.

Gut Feeling #4. “Your Spidey Senses Are Tingling”

This is the most popularized example of a gut feeling, made famous by Spiderman’s Uncle Ben. “With great power comes great responsibility.”

Your intuition is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes.

A good way to practice using intuition is to trust your hunches and “spidey senses.” These are the small inklings or inclinations you get about a person or situation.

For example, you might have a sneaking suspicion that your new neighbor is up to no good.

Or you get a weird feeling when you’re out on a first date with someone.

These are all examples of your intuition at work trying to give you a warning sign.

Gut Feeling #5. “You Can’t Stop Thinking About It”

Have you ever been in a situation where you can’t stop thinking about something, even though you know you should?

That’s your gut instinct telling you that you need to pay attention to what your mind is trying to tell you.

For example, let’s say you’re considering taking a new job.

But every time you think about it, you feel a pit in your stomach. You can’t stop thinking about all the things that could go wrong. This clearly shows that your gut instinct is trying to tell you something.

In this case, it’s probably telling you that the job isn’t right for you. It’s important to listen to your gut and trust your intuition.
