4: Not using enough lube.

How do some people show up day after day and never run out of steam? The answer is simple.

Cocaine. I’m joking — here’s the real deal.

Your daily behaviors fall into two categories: They either give you energy or take away from it. But sometimes, the line between the two is blurry. Healthy, balanced meals fuel your body, fast food makes you sluggish.

But your energy and drive depend on much more than your food intake and how you manage them has tremendous consequences.

An extensive Harvard study shows higher energy improves your satisfaction, engagement and performance at work, and even your relationships with others.

“Success is almost totally dependent upon drive and persistence. The extra energy required to make another effort or try another approach is the secret of winning.”

— Dennis Waitley

But if you often feel agitated, tired, or demotivated, check your daily doings for these energy vampires.

Getting Stuck In The Same Position Every Day Will Make You Lazy

What do sex and office work have in common?

No, it’s not getting yelled at by your boss (if you’re into that.) It’s that if you don’t change things up from time to time, your body gets tired of it.

When I worked in an office, I was surprised by how many people spend hours upon hours hunched over in their chairs, their eyelids getting heavier and heavier, barely held open by liters of coffee.

Movement creates energy.

In the morning, I work at a standing desk. When I sit down in the afternoon, I get up and wiggle around like a Latina butt in a Reggaeton club every 1.5 hours. This time interval goes well with the basic rest-activity cycle that determines your ups and downs in energy. Get your blood flowing and heart pumping.

If you feel too lazy to move, you need to move.

Entering A Reactive State Will Mess Up Your Mornings

“How you start your day is how you live your day. How you live your day is how you live your life.”

— Louise Hay

Most people make one crucial mistake when they wake up.

They check their phone for colorful apps and exciting messages. But this equals waking up in a smelly yellow puddle.

Looking at your phone first thing in the morning puts you in a reactive state instead of an active one. It blasts you with stressful work emails, fear-based news, and distracting feeds. This isn’t a good start.

The best way to stop shooting yourself in the foot is to remove the temptation.

I turn off my phone’s WiFi in the evening and don’t turn it on again before lunchtime the next day. To be extra sure, I’ve got an app blocker that’s active during the morning hours. You don’t have to live like a caveman, but not sinking into the digital sludge after you wake up will do wonders for your drive and energy.

Take control of your morning and you’ll enjoy your day much more.

Treating Your Bed Like A Torture Chamber Makes You Wake Up Tired

Evolution is pretty smart, yet most people ignore its basic principles completely.

There is a reason why all mammals spend hours every day in a vulnerable resting state — it’s because our brains and bodies need it.

A few years ago, I flicked through Instagram feeds and YouTube videos late at night until I could no longer keep my eyes open. When my alarm went off six hours later, I dragged myself through the day only to repeat the cycle. No wonder I was lazy and in a foul mood. Like one-third of Americans, I was chronically sleep-deprived.

Stop torturing yourself. Turn off the lights early. Keep your bedroom dark and cool — 18°C/65°F is the perfect temperature according to science. Use your slumber station for sleep and sex only.

Treat your bed like a temple and you’ll wake up like a god.

Not Using Enough Lubrication Turns You Sluggish

Today, I woke up in the jungle.

It’s a crazy place filled with plants, birds, insects, frogs, and of course, monkeys who scream louder than my ex-girlfriend. In contrast, the Sahara Desert is nothing but sand, scorpions, and a few lonely camels. One thing makes all the difference — water.

It’s the basis for life and keeps your body running smoothly like oil an engine.

Yet, most people don’t drink enough. Every night, you lose about a liter of precious fluid. In the morning, your engine feels rusty.

When I feel off but don’t know what’s wrong, drinking water solves the issue in 99% of cases.

Have a few cups every time you get up and move around.

Lubricate your engine and you’ll get a lot more horsepower out of it.

Making Your Blood Sugar Dance the Macarena Crashes Your Energy Levels

In the whole year 1900, humans produced 30kgs of sugar — today, over 50% of Americans eat almost three times as much each in the same period.

Apart from a higher risk for diabetes and a bunch of other diseases, roller coaster blood sugar levels skyrocket your energy only to make you crash like the Wright Brother’s first flight.

That’s why I skip sweet pastries, sugary drinks, and tons of pasta. Instead, I have a late breakfast around 11 am that consists of oats, fruit, and peanut butter. The result?

High energy levels all day long.

Forcing Yourself Into The Wrong Things Kills Your Mood And Drive

I used to snooze my alarm for hours.

For years, I tried everything. Louder alarms, more of them, and putting them out of reach. It didn’t help. Then, my life changed fundamentally — and the snoozing stopped overnight.

The magic pill?

Not forcing myself to do things I didn’t enjoy. Replacing my business studies and 9 to 5 hustle with writing helped me look forward to my day. But your job isn’t the only thing that makes you feel drained.

Hanging out with people you don’t like, going to events you don’t enjoy, and pretending to be someone else drain your energy like a vampire a blood bank.

Life’s too short to do things you hate — replace them with excitement and joy instead.
