All of them are extremely useful

Most self-improvement advice is overrated.

I learned that a few years ago when a self-help guru tried to sell me an online course for $997. It was overpriced. And when I enquired about the contents, it quickly became obvious that I could learn everything for free online.

Since then, I’ve tried to learn something new every day. I’ve also become happier, wealthier, and wiser due to my ability to apply useful advice from successful people.

Here are five mindset shifts that are easy to implement:

1) Flip A Coin If You’re Indecisive

This strategy works like a charm. If you can’t choose between two options, flip a coin. While waiting for the result, your mind will probably wish for one outcome over another. It’ll have a preference. And obviously, that’ll help you to make a decision.

I keep a coin in my backpack to avoid being indecisive. Whenever I don’t know what to do, I grab the coin, flip it, and make a decision. The whole process takes less than ten seconds.

It’s great!

2) Find Beauty In Ordinary Things

I love watching snow fall from the sky — especially at night when nobody is outside, and the Earth is covered in a thick white blanket.

I also enjoy looking up at the stars. Seeing the vastness of the universe helps to keep me humble and grounded. It’s awe-inspiring. And although I’m (probably) way too small to change the planet, I can always make a difference in my own world. And hopefully, that’s enough.

Find beauty in ordinary things. “Dwell on the beauty of life,” said Marcus Aurelius. “Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”

3) Focus On The Present Moment, Not The Future

A lot of people worry about events that are never going to happen. Even the Roman philosopher, Seneca, acknowledged that fact thousands of years ago:

“Putting things off is the biggest waste of life: it snatches away each day as it comes, and denies us the present by promising the future. The greatest obstacle to living is expectancy, which hangs upon tomorrow, and loses today. You are arranging what lies in Fortune’s control and abandoning what lies in yours. What are you looking at? To what goal are you straining? The whole future lies in uncertainty: live immediately.”

If something’s going to happen in the future, don’t focus on it right now. Worrying won’t do anything to change the outcome. Instead, be grateful for the present moment and treat every day as if it were your last.

Because one day, it will be.

4) Find Opportunities Where Others See Obstacles

Imagine your work, project, or essay got erased because of a computer glitch. Quite rightly, you’d be annoyed and wish it never happened. But can you do anything about the problem? Nope. And if that’s the case, you should do everything you can to create a better future.

Control your emotions. View the situation from a more objective perspective. And instead of looking at the obstacle, find the opportunity within it.

“The obstacle in the path becomes the path,” said Ryan Holiday. “Never forget, within every obstacle is an opportunity to improve our condition.”

5) Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help

Let me tell you a short story.

I used to be scared of being ridiculed. For a long time, I had social anxiety, and it was difficult to approach other people. Even ordering a cheeseburger at McDonald’s made me nervous.

But one day, I was stuck in the London Underground (metro) and couldn’t find my way out. I really needed glasses. But alas, I didn’t own any, and everything was blurry. My vision sucked.

Anyway, I asked a member of staff for help. He smiled and pointed me in the correct direction. “The London Underground can be difficult to navigate,” said the member of staff. “If your vision is blurry, it’s probably impossible.”

The point of the story? It’s okay to ask for help. Even if you’re talking to a complete stranger, they’ll probably want to make sure you’re okay. Because at the end of the day, 99% of people treat others how they want to be treated — with kindness and compassion.
