You have the skills and the motivation. You’re also ready to sweat it out and give it your best. But you’re not getting the results. Wonder why?

On your journey of success, you’re not aware that while pressing the accelerator, you’re also hitting the brake. It’s impossible to pick up speed and make progress if you don’t stop doing things that come in your way of achieving your goals.

Here are three ways to stop preventing yourself from sabotaging your success.

1. Overthinking things

When you set out to achieve your goals or try new things, there are doubts and apprehensions in your mind, and thus, there is a tendency to think things through.

However, excessive worrying and overthinking can lead to decision paralysis and prevent you from taking action.

Getting into too many details, mentally going back and forth with unreasonable concerns, and pursuing perfection can affect your productivity adversely.

You cannot prevent making mistakes by thinking things in your head. Imagining worst-case scenarios and sweating over ‘what-if’ questions will prevent you from taking any action whatsoever.

“Overthinking ruins you. It ruins the situation. And it twists things around. It makes you worry. Plus, it just makes everything worst than it actually is.”
— Karen Salmansohn

Instead of wasting your precious time and energy in overthinking, focus on creating a plan and preparing yourself well. Intensify your efforts and give it your best shot.

At some point, you have to trust yourself that you are making the right move and that even if things don’t pan out the way you visualized, you have alternate plans and can navigate the obstacles.

2. Not willing to take risks

Accomplishing any worthwhile goal involves taking risks. However, there are many people who, due to the uneasiness attached to uncertainty or out of fear of getting things wrong and failing, play it safe.

You cannot get far in life if you remain risk-averse. There are not many opportunities coming your way if you choose to confine yourself to the comfort zone.

Life’s unpredictable, and it’s ever-changing. You can’t guess how things will play out for you in the future or if you’ll continue to make progress and prosper as you’re doing today. What is working for you today might not be relevant tomorrow.

To keep yourself in step with times and ahead of your game, you must explore newer avenues and look for more unexplored possibilities.

Taking your chances will open new doors for you and bring in fresh prospects. Also, it widens your mental horizon and gives you more options to choose from.

On the other hand, if you play safe and remain content with what you have always been doing, you forego your chances to bank on newer and valuable opportunities. Keeping yourself overly safe is saying ‘no’ to all growth and personal development.

Times are changing. You need to innovate and test new ideas constantly. And it is only through learning and experimenting that you make progress.

When you take a risk, there’s no guarantee that you’ll succeed each time; there is every possibility that your undertaking might fail.

But if you don’t, you’ll never know how far you could have gone, what works for you and what doesn’t, and most importantly, you won’t be able to tap your full potential.

There’s nothing wrong with taking calculated risks. You don’t have to jump at an opportunity impulsively; go blindly and recklessly put your resources at stake.

Taking calculated risks entails preparing yourself thoroughly by adequately planning, weighing the pros and cons, and then taking a call. This measured approach drastically reduces your chances of making mistakes and avoids a negative outcome.

Willingness to take risks will most times hold you in good stead and provide you an edge over your competition.

“We must have the courage to bet on our ideas, to take the calculated risk, and to act. Everyday living requires courage if life is to be effective and bring happiness.”
— Maxwell Maltz

3. Not working Consistently

No matter which field you are in, one thing is sure — it’s a long road to success. You can reach your goals and ensure positive results of your efforts if you work consistently — day after day — with dedication and passion, determination and grit.

Many people begin their success journey with great enthusiasm; however, after a while, when they meet challenges, lose their steam.

Whether it is the accomplishment of life goals, changing habits and behavior patterns, or bettering your life, you need to show up every single day, no matter the difficulties or problems you face.

Only those who remain consistent reap the rewards of their efforts and accomplish all that they set their eyes on.

Working in spurts or when motivation strikes will only get you so far.

John Maxwell rightly said, “Small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.”

The easiest way to ensure that you work consistently is to give yourself clear and definite goals.

Without setting yourself concrete goals, you cannot find the motivation to work on it day-in and day-out. But once you have a particular goal to achieve, and if that goal resonates with your inner self, you will effortlessly focus on that task or goal and make sure you consistently take action towards that direction.

In Conclusion

Everyone strives for success, but few know how to make things happen. Success is not difficult if you approach it with the right mindset and stop doing things that can dilute your efforts or negate the hard work.

You are capable of doing great things and achieving your big goals. Just keep focused on your work, change the negative behavior patterns, keep going, and soon you’ll see yourself soaring high.
