The hardest part is letting people go.

Around this time last year, I became a bit of a loner.

I started to realize that a lot of the people in my life were inhibiting my growth and my chances of success (either deliberately or accidentally), so I just started slicing my inner circle into pieces.

I don’t know what happened, but one day, I got sick of being unhappy all the time. I started to cut people out.

All of a sudden, I went from having many friends (but none who I was close with) to pretty much no friends besides my Jiu-Jitsu training partners.

I had a few months of no social interaction except for surface levels relationships with new people who I didn’t know or trust. I was terrified that everything was going to backfire and that soon, I wasn’t just going to be alone, I was going to be depressed.

Luckily, that’s not what happened. Instead, I became friends with some people who inspire the hell out of me.

These are 10 things that my happiest friends do every single day.

They experiment.

Being afraid to try new things is the single biggest killer of progress in people, regardless of their field of interest or level of expertise.

They say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, but that’s not really a great way to look at life.

If it ain’t broke, but it’s not perfect, look for a way to make it better.

Find beauty in the process.

They exercise.

This shouldn’t have to be on this list, but it is because I know a lot of people who are writers and business people who think that they can go extended periods of time without regular exercise.

If you want to have good mental health, you need to be a master of your mind and your body.

To master your body, learn to enjoy a rigid exercise routine.

They read.

One approach that I take in Jiu-Jitsu training is I take concepts from books I read (like Flow or Deep Work) and I apply them to learning new techniques.

I’m not revolutionary in using these ideas to help me improve my skills, but I haven’t seen anyone else do this in Jiu-Jitsu. I’ve been able to separate myself by surrounding myself with ideas from people smarter and more successful than me.

Pretty much all smart, successful, and happy people read and learn every single day.

What makes you think you’re the exception?

They think.

Taking a few moments every day to be mindful of yourself in the world is essential for mental health.

When you stop moving, the first thing you’ll probably realize is just how much your head has been spinning. You can learn how to stop being afraid of your own mind.

Thinking without constantly berating yourself is one of the most powerful acts of “self-love” there is.

They talk with happy/intelligent people.

I’m going to be blunt here: some people are not worth talking to.

This doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with those people (they’re still worthy of love and kindness and all that stuff), but you have to understand that your time is limited. The happier and more intelligent the people you talk to are, the more interesting and intelligent you will become.

The more limited you realize your time is, the more valuable it becomes.

You don’t get happier from watching Elmo, you get happier from reading Aristotle.

Conversation is the same way.

They doubt themselves.

A healthy dose of skepticism is essential to a complete life.

I’m always skeptical who are completely free of doubt, because usually “too much confidence” is always followed by stagnation. When you’re too confident, you’re only a hop, skip, and jump away from arrogance.

Doubts are your mind’s way of bringing you back to reality.

A little bit of doubt is good — it keeps you humble and grateful.

They overcome their doubts.

Doubts are a very important part of happiness.

What makes them essential is that most people never manage to get past their doubts.

It’s crazy what can happen when you get past your doubts and start to believe in yourself.

They have some sort of writing habit.

No — I’m not just saying this because I’m a writer who wants to justify his neuroticism.

Writing is the act of visualizing your thoughts, and for people who are trying to achieve goals, the ability to see your thoughts makes it easier for you to identify your required areas for improvement.

It also helps you work through the aforementioned doubts from the point above.

This writing can be as sophisticated as writing a blog or book or as simple as keeping a journal. It can even be as simple as writing lengthy captions on social media about your journey.

Writing is the most powerful tool for self-development.

They do something for their mental health.

I write and see a therapist every other week.

Some habits are better than others, but what is less important than what you do is the fact that you do it consistently and that it works for you.

It’s hard to be happy when your mind is weighing you down.

They dream.

Someone on Twitter posted a tweet the other day asking about people’s biggest goals for the rest of the year.

It made me stop and think. I haven’t dreamt in a minute.

I’ve been so focused on the present and “grinding” that I’ve forgotten what made me start chasing this crazy writer/Jiu-Jitsu fighter life in the first place.

It started with a dream one day 7 years ago while I was walking through town in Eugene, Oregon while blasting music and sipping coffee.

“I could do that… maybe,” I thought.

7 years later, we’re living the thing.

Don’t forget to dream every now and then. It will motivate the hell out of you.

Closing Thoughts

The most important daily habit for being happy isn’t reading, writing, thinking, dreaming, or anything else on this list.

The most important daily habit for being happy is removing people from your life who are unhappy and then replacing those people with happy people.

And yes, that means you might have to be alone for a while. It will be uncomfortable at first, but you learn to enjoy your own company. Being alone is better than being at a parade full of unhappy people.

Negativity and misery are more contagious than any viral disease. Don’t allow them into your life. Protect your mind and live your life.

Before you know it, you’ll be pretty damn happy.
