What to do if you want to line yourself up with the best

Oftentimes, when people start talking about success and individuals who are successful, it’s from the sole lens of their work and career-based effort. However, just about any biography or biographic story about a successful person will show you that they do far more than work.

Sure, there are a few outliers who only ever did work and were well known for that, but most people that we celebrate and look up to in our culture are people who make time for far more. Here are four things that I’ve found successful people make time to do and make a priority out of to live incredible lives:

1 | Improving themselves

Successful people spend an inordinate amount of time doing things that improve themselves. This can come in the form of increasing their skillset through learning, reading, attending/going through training, or in developing spiritually or emotionally through meditation and journaling.

“Any man’s life will be filled with constant and unexpected encouragement if he makes up his mind to do his level best each day.” — Booker T. Washington

When it comes to The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, these individuals understand the meaning of the seventh habit, “Sharpen the Saw”, to a T — knowing that they are their own best weapon and tool. They know that they have to keep themselves working and ever increasingly efficient in order to be able to do good work and keep increasing their value-adding power and efforts.

2 | Their family

Countless numbers of wannabe wealthy individuals mistake something about already wealthy and successful people. They think that those who make the most money and are known by the most people ignore their families. This, in most instances, is not the case. People who make money, are well-known, and truly successful in a deeper understanding of the world never had to forsake their loved ones, whatever form they come in.

“To us, family means putting your arms around each other and being there.” — Barbara Bush

While they don’t have all the free time in the world and they have to be strategic with how they spend their off hours, successful people follow a seemingly effective trend of setting aside specific time for their family. Like everything else, this time gets put into their calendar, whether it’s going on a trip with a family member or a specific day of the week they set aside for time with loved ones. Like any working individual, they can’t always be around their family, but successful people make time to do so and aim to be as present as possible during that time.

3 | Reflecting on their life

The most productive and profit-making individuals in the world tend to be those who do not let their lives become one that is unexamined. You can often find them slowing down, looking at what’s going on, problem-solving even smaller things with larger impacts than may be surface level, and making decisions about how to go farther. They know that a fast-paced and unconsidered life is not going to bring them to their biggest goals, or at least not in a sustainable way.

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.”- Aristotle

Whether this is through meditation retreats, evening journaling, having a podcast where they talk through life with friends, or having a reflection period at the end of the day, the most wholehearted, thriving individuals, wealthy and not, are those who reflect on their life and aim to improve in little bit significant ways each and every day.

4 | Reviewing their goals

This is probably the most obvious of this list of 4points, but I think it’s still necessary to include. Successful people stay up to date on what they’re aiming for. Whether this is through using a guided planner that allows them to do this, having a whiteboard with their goals written out on them, or meeting with a life coach to discuss where they’re going with their life, they review their targets and analyze frequently how to best work towards them.

“Never quit. It is the easiest cop-out in the world. Set a goal and don’t quit until you attain it. When you do attain it, set another goal, and don’t quit until you reach it. Never quit.” –Bear Bryant

This helps them to study the most effective ways to move forward but also helps them to keep their goals at the forefront of their mind. This way, they always know what they’re working towards, and are able to remember the whys of what they’re doing.

Whether you’re aiming to be a billionaire or simply get a little bit more done each week, I hope that this list has been helpful to you. Being successful is a mindset more than anything, and it’s about putting what’s important first. I wish you the best of luck in those endeavors, and may you have success in every area that matters.

Kindly, Katie
