If you feel some days like your soul is dying, it could be from doing these five boring things.

Not traveling

You say you aren’t traveling for a number of reasons.

You can’t take time off work.

It costs too much.

You’re fearful of getting sick.

Some of those reasons feel legitimate while others are in your what-if mental bank of excuses.

All the while your soul is in a slumber. Slowly unresponsive because of your lack to push yourself into new experiences.

Wake up already to the world around you.

How to start traveling:

Stop what you’re doing right now at work. Pull up your calendar and schedule some days off. Block the time, alert your manager, and give yourself no excuse not to plan an adventure.
Start local. Look around in your hometown and discover the museums, historical spots, and landmarks right in your backyard. Pack a lunch and take advantage of everything free to the public.
Rent an RV or start driving in your car. There are amazing road trips you can take to explore the outdoors safely away from people. Don’t allow fear to stop you from waking up your soul.

Mowing without headphones

Ok, this is a weird one. But bear with me.

If you have been mowing without headphones I have two things to say to you:

You’re doing no favors to your long-term hearing.
You are wasting a lot of time when you could be getting inspired.
Whether it’s 30 minutes or 3+ hours mowing the grass, that’s a lot of added time in your life when you could be listening to books, podcasts, or music that does sheer magic to lift your soul.

My life wouldn’t be the same without stoic advice from Ryan Holiday or personal growth reflections from Glennon Doyle.

There is no greater harm than that of wasted time. — Michelangelo

Mow the grass and start protecting those ears while learning something new. A win-win!

How to start using your mowing time wisely:

Get yourself a good pair of noise-canceling headphones. I’m not going to list links. You are quite capable of doing a google search.
Download some books from Audible. Search on Medium under “Books” and you’ll find countless recommendations from writers on this platform.
Use your time efficiently and feed your soul with good things.

Complaining

Complaining is the easiest default behavior you can stoop to on any given day. We are all guilty of it. And guess what, it’s slowly killing your soul.

No one wants to hang out with someone going on and on about all the troubles and pains and discomforts in their life.

Every complaint spilling out of your mouth is pushing more and more people further away from you.

The country is falling apart.

My groceries cost too much.

I’m sick of my life.

Blah, blah, blah.

“What you’re supposed to do when you don’t like a thing is change it. If you can’t change it, change the way you think about it. Don’t complain.” — Maya Angelou

How to stop complaining:

See the bigger picture. These everyday complaints are so small in the context of your life. Stop wasting your time.
Every time you feel a complaint wanting to spill out of your lips, think of some solutions and blurt them out instead. People enjoy being around people with ideas.
Focus on what you have. Write it down to be visually reminded. But for the sake of your soul, stop with the complaints on repeat.

Opting for take-out all the time

Who doesn’t love to order take-out now and then?

I love some good Chinese food and spring rolls. But defaulting to it constantly — you are robbing yourself of being around others.

Your soul is yearning for connection.

Almost 59% of the U.S. workforce are remote workers. Loneliness is the second biggest challenge.

So what does this have to do with getting take-out all the time?

With this remote work are you meeting up with others for coffee or drinks? Are you going out to dinner and sitting down to slow down and eat?

What you thought was harmless take-out every week could be lost opportunities to be with others because you’re working too much at home.

How to start having intentional connections:

If money is the issue, set up Sunday dinners at home. Invite family, friends, or co-workers. You can enjoy some good food (maybe even healthier) and good company.
Go out once a week to one place in your community. It could be grabbing a coffee in the morning or having a drink after work. Support local businesses and recharge your soul. You may even meet some new people.

Refusing to get a pet

If you feel like something is missing, maybe it’s because you need a furry friend.

Pets are powerful for your soul and your mental health. In a study from the HABRI survey of Family Physicians, 87% percent of patients said they had a better outlook on life after getting a pet.

Every time you keep refusing to get the puppy, cat, hamster, bunny, or whatever, you are staying closed off to connecting with another living being.

Your soul is aching to feel joy. Don’t deprive yourself of having a best friend that never talks back and loves you.

Who doesn’t need that in their life?

How to stay open to having a pet:

Do your research. Talk to others you know that have pets already. What is the biggest challenge? What is the cost to take care of them?
Find a pet that fits your lifestyle. Don’t get a pet that requires a lot of care when you have to travel from time to time for work.
Have pet sitters you can trust. There are also pet-sitting apps of people right in your neighborhood that would lovingly take care of your pets while you’re away.
