Write down your motivation

We’re far more likely to accomplish something if we write it down, rather than just keep it in our heads. It becomes more real that way — and your mind can tell you that you’ve done something once you see it written down. Make a list of what motivates you and makes you want to do better each day. A little daily reminder can go a long way!

Set a goal for each day

Studies show that those who set goals are generally more successful than those who don’t. Successful people focus on goal-setting in their personal and professional lives, so if you want to be among them, start setting daily goals now. It doesn’t matter how small they are — the point is just to get into a routine of systematically setting one every day.

Prioritize your tasks

If you don’t know what needs to be done, start by prioritizing all of your responsibilities into high, medium and low priority lists. After that, break everything down into manageable tasks that you can complete in a relatively short period (30 minutes is a good rule of thumb). When those 30 minutes are up, move on to something else — don’t stick with one project for an hour unless it’s truly important.

Focus on what you can control

Some days, it seems like we can’t get anything done. It doesn’t help that we live in a world of constant stimuli. Emails, calls, texts — it feels like you’re always waiting for something. The easiest way to keep your productivity at an optimal level is to realize what you have control over and what you don’t. First, identify what you can do today: schedule every moment of your day and start with small tasks until they snowball into big ones.

Work in short sprints

If you work in short sprints, one 30-minute session might be more productive than four hours at a stretch. Stanford researcher Tony Schwartz recommends short sessions because it’s easier to maintain concentration and focus that way, as well as ensuring breaks throughout your day. That allows for greater recovery and regeneration, he says, which means you can push yourself harder than if you were trying to sit down and crank out several hours of work in one go.

Take regular breaks

Allowing your mind and body time to relax can help you feel more energized throughout your day. Set a timer on your phone or computer to alert you when it’s time for a break; then walk away from your desk and get up, stretch, move around and do something different for five minutes. If possible, move outside in nature during your break — it will give you even more of a boost when you return.

Clear distractions before starting a task

The best way to boost your productivity is to avoid letting distractions get in your way. Take a few minutes before you begin any task to make sure you have everything you need and that it’s clear of anything that could distract you. If possible, eliminate or reduce your use of cell phones and e-mail while working; even just having these things within reach can be a source of distraction.

Use your time effectively

To boost your productivity, set a timer for every task you complete. How much time do you need to accomplish what you need? Try setting a timer for ten minutes, then take a five-minute break. Then get right back at it with another ten-minute session before taking another break. This routine will help you stay on track and finish tasks without wasting too much time.
