A new idea. A new habit. A new self.

If you are looking to change your life or if change is happening to you, change is the only constant in life.

The more you resist change, the tougher life becomes.

Ask yourself how you can change your life and become better at reacting to the transformations happening around you.

There are some simple yet powerful changes that significantly impact our lives. There’s no use avoiding change because it will find and challenge you.

The key is to activate positive change in your life because the more opportunities you have to change things in your life, the happier and more fulfilled your life will become.

There are 10 things you can proactively do today to change your life. Let’s dive in.

1. Let Go of Regrets

Regrets are when you feel sad or disappointed over something that has happened in the past. It’s about a loss or a missed opportunity. Let your regrets go. They only hold you back. If you have regrets looking at Facebook, delete your Facebook account.

If you spend time thinking about the past, you’ll miss making new memories in the present. You can’t change what happened in the past so let your regrets go. The only thing you can control is the present moment.

Action items

If you want to let go of your regrets, write down each regret on a piece of paper or post-it note. Bury it in the backyard or somewhere else. You could also burn it in a bonfire when you are making smores. Have a “let go of regrets party” with your friends.

2. Accept Where You are In Life

You must look at the truths of life and accept them. Don’t spend time thinking about how things could have been different. Life takes you on a winding journey where you may feel up one day and down the next.

Sometimes, we wish life wasn’t a certain way. Confront life head-on. Don’t tell yourself lies. Staying stuck in your daily patterns won’t help you. You are destined to live this life, so you must accept the uncomfortable truths of life. It is better than living a comfortable life where you are lying to yourself.

Action items

Surrender to where you are in life. Embrace it. Take a deep breath. Tell yourself that this is where you are and then go make things happen.

3. Live in the Moment

Many of us think the grass is greener on the other side, and once we get there, it will be better. We anticipate the future so much that we don’t embrace the here and now. We focus on pursuing happiness so we miss the joy in the ordinary.

Our lives are not like what’s portrayed in the movies, and that’s okay. You don’t need to change things to make you happy. It would help if you focused on the present to improve the future.

Live in the moment, not in the past or future.

You can be happy when you appreciate life, are open-minded, and have an appreciation for the ordinary aspects of life. You treasure the little moments in life, even the mundane task you are working on at work.

A sign of maturity is paying attention to the present, not the past or future.

Mindfulness is about living in the moment. It keeps your attention focused on what’s happening now in your body and mind. It’s looking at the world around you and taking it in. Become a better observer of your thoughts. Process your emotions before you act.

Action item

Start a journal, sign up for a yoga class, or take a nature walk where you smell the flowers.

4. Help Someone Else Grow

You know something that can help someone else. You have knowledge that others want to know. When you help others, you increase your own knowledge.

When you help someone else grow, you win, and the other person wins. When you teach someone, you find gaps in your thinking. When you help someone else, you help yourself.

Action item

Become a mentor and find someone who can be your protégé.

5. Find Your Purpose in Life

“There’s no greater gift than to honor your life’s calling. It’s why you were born. And how you become most truly alive.” — Oprah Winfrey, an American media executive and philanthropist

Are you living a life that has a purpose? Find out what your life is all about. Why are you on this planet Earth? Discover what makes you happy, write down what you want to achieve in life. Explore your dreams.

When you have meaning in life, you set a north star for how you want to live your life. You will wander aimlessly if you don’t have meaning in your life.

When you know your life’s purpose, you’ll live each day to the fullest. Your purpose in life enables you to wake up in the morning excited, guides your decisions in life, influences behaviors, and shapes your goals.

Action items

Donate your time, money, and talent. Surround yourself with positive people. Start conversations with new people.

6. Pay Attention to What Information You Consume

“Your mind will take the shape of what you frequently hold in thought.” — Marcus Aurelius, a Roman emperor

The information we digest impacts our outlook on life. The information we consume can change our thoughts — for better or for worse.

What you consume impacts your mindset. Be careful of the media you consume: blogs, books, TV news, TV shows, movies, and social media. All this media impacts your outlook on life.

Research shows the average person is more physiologically activated by negative content than by positive content. Negative media can poison your mind, and it doesn’t help your life. Be careful what media you consume because your mind takes the shape of what you think.

Action items

Stop watching the TV news or reading the news on your smartphone or in a newspaper. Stop checking your social media feed. Don’t binge-watch so much.

7. Embrace a Hobby

Hobbies can bring you pleasure and relaxation. When you embrace your passions, you find an outlet for things you are not doing at work. That’s why side hustles are popular because you can make some extra money doing something you are passionate about.

Hobbies make you a better person.

When you embrace your hobby, you make your life easier. You learn more about yourself, and you train your brain to adopt a growth mindset that is critical to success. For example, writing teaches you how to think.

Action item

Start a side hustle today. Write on Medium, launch a blog, or start a YouTube channel.

8. Seize the Morning

The morning is one of the most crucial parts of your day. You get out of bed to go to work. You set the stage in the morning for the rest of the day. Train your brain to have a better morning routine.

Your real wake-up call is that your mornings are no longer working for you. There are some warning signs your mornings are not going as good as they could. If you don’t create a healthy morning routine, you’ll be less productive.

Don’t work against yourself and create morning habits that can spoil your day. Set a positive tone that lasts. Make sure you start the right way each day.

Action item

Before you start work, get at least one task done. Make your bed or exercise for 30 minutes. Getting one thing done early each morning can make a substantial difference in your outlook.

9. Cultivate Your Curiosity

Curiosity is a strong desire to know or learn something. Whether it is cooking, figuring out how your computer works, becoming an entrepreneur, learning marketing, or doing chores around the house, you can find out how to do it better.

You don’t need an MBA to become a successful marketer or start a business from scratch. You just need curiosity. Anything is possible if you have curiosity and are hungry to find out some answers to your problems in life.

Action item

If you don’t know how to do something, Google “How to [insert topic].” You could also search for it on YouTube — the second biggest search engine behind Google.

10. Become Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

To grow, you must be comfortable being uncomfortable. Embrace the suck in your life. The Navy SEALs have a “40% rule” that is when they think they can’t do more, they have 60% more to give.

The only way to change is to be honest with yourself. Do things that make you feel uncomfortable. They will force you to change. They will help you understand yourself better.

Don’t rationalize why you can’t do something. Try something today that challenges you. Learn something about yourself you didn’t know before.

Action item

If you don’t like how you look in videos (hint: we all don’t), go record yourself with your smartphone or a professional camera. Watch it and critique yourself. You don’t have to share it or publish it on YouTube.

Bringing It All Together

There are 10 ideas that can change your life forever. Let go of regrets, accept where you are in life, live in the moment, and help someone else grow. Find your purpose in life, pay attention to what information you consume, embrace a hobby, seize the morning, cultivate your curiosity, and become comfortable being uncomfortable.

Change comes into our lives whether we like it or not. Our lives change because of something external (a crisis), or they change because of something internal (our choices). We are faced with making choices in life. Do you proactively change, or do you resist change? The choice is yours.
